Function

Function:
Control of topological states of DNA by transient breakage and subsequent rejoining of DNA strands. Topoisomerase II makes double-strand breaks. Essential during mitosis and meiosis for proper segregation of daughter chromosomes. May play a role in regulating the period length of ARNTL/BMAL1 transcriptional oscillation (By similarity).
Catalytic Activity:
ATP-dependent breakage, passage and rejoining of double-stranded DNA.
Cofactor:
COFACTOR: Name=Mg(2+); Xref=ChEBI:CHEBI:18420;
Enzyme Regulation:
ENZYME REGULATION: Specifically inhibited by the intercalating agent amsacrine.
Active Site:
ACT_SITE 805 805 O-(5'-phospho-DNA)-tyrosine intermediate.
